Guitar Lessons

Guitar

Lessons are designed to create an understanding of guitar technique by applying knowledge of notation, improvisation, and chord construction. This forum provides an opportunity for students to explore their musical aspirations through guitar and expose them to musical concepts while exploring a variety of repertoire from diverse times, places and cultures. Our Lessons will organize the often-ambiguous guitar fretboard, and provide you with the knowledge to confidently navigate the instrument and develop your technique.   You'll greatly improve your single-line technique, and gain a firm understanding of the possibilities available within the guitar's fretboard.

Music Lessons

Drums

The course explores five main topics—musicianship, hand-to-hand technique, snare drum reading, drum set coordination, and repertoire development —with each week becoming increasingly more challenging. The course starts with teaching the basics, such as the concept of time; how to develop proper grip, playing area, and sound; and how to achieve balance and evenness between your hands. You will perform helpful strengthening and dexterity exercises and explore drum rudiments, including the double stroke roll, single stroke roll, paradiddle, double paradiddle, triple paradiddle, drag, drag paradiddle 1, flam, and flam accent,

time signatures such as 4/4, 2/4, 3/4, 12/8, 6/8, 9/8, and 5/4. The course moves on to topics related to two-, three- and four-way coordination, touch, balance, dynamics, and shadings in the context of common groove patterns found in Rhythm & Blues, Pop-Rock, Funk, Rock, Jazz, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban music.

Music Theory Lessons

Piano

Class piano is designed to teach the concepts and fundamentals needed to perform on the piano.  It will increase musical understanding beyond just reading notes by teaching students a vocabulary of chords and keys, accompaniment patterns, and improvisational techniques.   Students will play melodies in several positions.  Students will develop good practice habits, and learn techniques to increase the muscular agility and flexibility of their hands.  We will delve into music at its source, find out how music is constructed, and discover the composers and history behind the music.

Bass

The bass not only holds the band together rhythmically, but is also a crucial component to the overall sound and direction of the music.  You'll learn to create and perform your own unique bass lines in a variety of different styles. Throughout your studies you'll focus on four key areas of performance: time, tonality, timbre, and taste, and learn how to use theory to generate ideas that you can apply directly to your bass lines.  Study topics include pentatonic, blues, major, and minor scales; diatonic harmony; groove and time feel; and compositional techniques, such as tritones, pedal points, and double stops.
